Have you tried 'Star of the Week' (or 'Star of the Day') in your classroom? It is a wonderful way to build a community of learners through recognition and acknowledgment of students.
You can cycle through your students systematically or link the routine to special award or recognition.
This pack provides you with visuals to help celebrate the star each week!
poster (write student name)
poster (fill in details about student in a getting-to-know-you style)
student worksheet version of poster
3 student bookmarks (gift or prize)
classroom banner (bunting) spelling 's-t-a-r of the w-e-ek'
one page craft (make the cute star character)
We have included a full range of options for 'Star of the Day' as well in an additional file. Just choose the one that suits your classroom!
To implement ‘Star of the Day’ we recommend:
choose a student on Friday afternoon and tell them that they are ‘Star of the Day’ next week
write their name on the poster (laminated for reuse) ready for Monday morning
during the week, call them to the front and go through the detailed poster, filling in all the information
get ideas from the class for the section ‘my friends think I am….’ - this allows your star to listen to all the wonderful things being said about him/her
allow ‘special’ desk time for your star to color the coloring page or fill out the worksheet poster
present the certifiacte/award at a special time through the week along with a prize bookmark
you may choose to assign special privileges to the star, in addition to the spotlight, but this is optional
the included banner makes a lovely option for a special classroom area dedicated to the star poster and/or chair
